The Waitakere Transfer Station

On Tuesday last week we had a class trip to the Waitakere Transfer Station as part of our 'Zero Waste' unit. It was so interesting and we learnt so many facts such as: each week Auckland creates enough landfill waste to fill an entire rugby field right up to the goal posts!

Look out for some future posts about our Zero Waste unit.

Bruce Potter

Last week Bruce Potter visited our school as part of Literacy Week. He is an amazing artist and author and demonstrated to us the power of doodling on a piece of paper and using our imaginations!

Our Wonderful Tiger Sketches

This week we learnt how to sketch using only a pencil. We were learning how to shade and make our pencils shout and whisper.

Mrs Hanson told us we were not allowed to use a rubber and this was our only copy, so no draft copy first. Initially we didn't think we would be able to sketch without making mistakes. But Mrs Hanson showed us how to start very lightly and then add layers to our sketches so that the focus is taken off any errors.

We were all so amazed and proud of what we produced....and so was Mrs Hanson!

Sustainable Coastlines

On Tuesday we participated in a presentation about sustainable coastlines and how to look after our oceans so that we can protect the marine life. We learnt about all the rubbish that is found on our coastlines and inside many fish and seabirds. Most of this rubbish is plastic and it was really sad to see how many different types of plastic can be found in one marine animal once if dies.
